Endless Inspiration

ngurrak barring invites you to explore the deep cultural and creative history of the Dandenong Ranges on RidgeWalk.

Across 39 km of interconnected walking trails, see why some of Australia’s most significant artists, activists and creatives have drawn inspiration from this landscape. It’s a tradition that continues to thrive today in the vibrant villages and communities of our region.

ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk tells local stories of art, culture and history through a variety of creative platforms including architectural nodes, permanent sculptures, land art and heritage interpretation.

As you journey along the tracks, art and signage provides rich and diverse cultural encounters while preserving the natural experience. You’ll also discover five destinations focused on five key themes which examines the human relationship to place, from First Nations people’s connection to Country to shared contemporary experiences: Ways of Seeing, Community, Activism, Resilience and Country.

Each destination is unique in design and built to reflect its key theme. Stories, images and interpretive material are expressed within the built elements of the destination, engaging visitors, heightening their curiosity and encouraging deeper learning about a shared culture and history that continues to shape the people and environment.

Wayfinding and Interpretive Signage

Signage along the track provides practical guidance and enriching cultural information. In addition to wayfinding, the signage interprets many of the historical stories of the region to engage visitors and enhance their journey.

Permanent art

Our collection of permanent art includes works that are significant in concept, scale and material and have a minimum lifespan of 15 years. Each work is site specific and responds to the surrounding country, community and history. Four permanent artworks are allocated funding in the RidgeWalk capital budget, two of which are significant Indigenous art projects.

Temporary art & programming

RidgeWalk maintains a diverse mix of temporary art and programming. Highlights include installations, performances and other actions occurring at specific locations for a defined period. The lifespan for temporary works can be from one day to one year. These ephemeral experiences are developed through artist residencies, partnerships, commissions or other targeted programs.

Digital – Beyond Site

Digital artworks including an augmented reality experience have also been developed. These digital tools function as practical visitor guides, learning hubs, participatory vehicles and tools for artists to express creative content.
